RIVALED
“Rivaled” presents two 28-minute pieces in opposition to each other. “Faith” features blown-out violin with electronics that resolves in a tonal drone in its final third, while “Void” is bare, improvised acoustic violin. The side titles are an obvious nod to the classic Faith/Void split, using the connotations of each group’s name as a loose, impressionistic template for the work. If the frenzied noise on Side A represents any sort of spiritual bliss, the B-side represents a stark comedown and return to reality.
